Ambrai was born into a small traders camp that she has yet to name. She displayed an alarming intelligence at a young age, learning all the teaching ballads letter perfect the first time she was taught them. She displayed a remarkable ability with numbers, and took over most of the accounting jobs in the camp when she was 7.
Her abilites have earned her little but grief, however. Rejected by her peers because of her ability and regarded by adults as a curious animal to be studied, she never had many friends, and turned to scrolls and calculations to be her companions. As such, she tends to be closed up and akward around others, afraid to reveal her true opinions.
Just before her 13th birthday, she was working in a wagon by some scrolls when one of the larger boys in the camp came upon her, not realizing she was there. He had no idea of her true ability, and when he saw her there doing strangely adanced calculations, he was shocked and filled with jealousy, being considered very good with numbers himself. He snatched the hide away and tried to burn it in the latern she was using (she wasn't allowed to waste glows.) Ambrai became enraged, all the years of abuse boiling over, and she belted the boy across the nose, causing him to stumble against the table and tip the lantern onto the floor, lighting the precious pieces of paper and hide alight, and then the whole wagon. They both barely got out alive, but Ambrai's troubles were not yet over.
After staggering out of the wagon, the children were beset by adults demanding to know what had happened. Seeing the boy's bloody nose and the burning wagon, they all blamed the unliked Ambrai for the trouble, and promised a beating when the fire was put out. Ambrai, scared as a child would be, decided enough was enough, and ran away.
She wandered, lost, in the forest for almost a week, dirty and starving before stumbling out into Monaco Weyr. Once there, she hid for over two weeks before being discovered by the Junior Weyrwoman Briana, and given jobs and a home in Monaco Weyr.
A new twist came in Ambrai's life when she was preparing to go swimming in the sea with a friend and Candidate Jessica. She happened uopn brown Folath and his rider, J'ran. Folath promptly examined Ambrai and declared her worthy of standing for Zabrenevath and Nhareth's newly laid clutch. A startled and surprised Ambrai tentatively accepted, for what else could she do with a huge dragon wrapped around her?
Ambrai's candidacy was full of adjustments some quite nice, others not so nice, with Weyr life, with green flights, pesky fellow candidates, and a not-so-subtle crush on Folath's rider, though she would die before she'd admit it. Her candidacy passed by in a flash, and bfore she knew it, she was bustled out onto the Sands one steamy night (in the middle of the night!). Almost all of the dragons had Impressed, when one adorably sweet green hatchling, after playing in the egg shards, ran almost smack into an awed Ambrai, starting a new phase of her life.
As a weyrling to green Sopanith, Ambrai's learned to cope better with unexpected things, as well as adapting to having a new voice in her mind.
Or so she thought. Just when everything was going good; they'd graduated from weyrlinghood and been tapped by J'ran into the Hurricane Wing, Sopanith decided this would be the /perfect/ time to go proddy. And so she did, taking poor Ambrai along with her. And, much to Ambrai's displeasure, she Rose in a rather... acrobatic flight (the log can be found here.)Finally, none other than brown Folath snatched the falling green from the skies, leaving Ambrai in a rather akward position with her new wingleader, J'ran.
